The Final Curtain
May, 2000, New York, New York

Are you prepared for the inevitable?
How do you want to be remembered?
What can you do about it?
The Final Curtain was a satirical concept that depicted the death care industry in an over-the-top and humorous way, hoping to provoking individuals to think about their feelings about life, death and burial in a new light -- before it's personally too late.
To Joey Skaggs, the death care industry is a giant corporate scam, exquisitely successful at commercializing death. Pre-need insurance, embalming services, open coffins, headstones, ground space, religious sanctity, and ancillary products are merchandized to con people into spending money under the premise that this is the right thing to do.
Using calculated public relations and marketing tactics, death care providers have elevated spiritual reverence in the funeral parlor to a high art. Their ploy is to appear to pay appropriate tribute to the dead, making a good show for the mourners. Ultimately, it's a waste of space and resources, and a burden to the natural environment at the financial and emotional expense of their clients.

In 1998, Skaggs put together an international team of volunteer writers, artists, and designers to create
The Final Curtain , a Web site purporting to represent a voracious real estate development company, featuring a Disney-like memorial theme park and mall which included a traveling time share program for the deceased.
The Final Curtain catered to creative individuals (visual artists, poets, performers, etc.) who wanted to construct their own iconoclastic, irreverent, and/or humorous monuments, mausoleums, and urns.
Planned to be franchised in major metropolitan cities around the world and open to the public, the parks would be a haven for those who wished to be free of the shackles of the current death-care industry's morbid grip on life's passing.
The Final Curtain memorial theme park concept was so outrageous, yet so plausible, that it was widely reported in newspapers, magazines, on television, radio, and on the Internet. It was immediately accepted by the public as a reality without question. People both embraced and attacked it.
Venture capitalists expressed interest in investing. A corporation threatened legal action for trademark infringement. The States of Colorado and New Jersey threatened investigation into the illegal sales of securities on the Internet. Television and Hollywood movies were proposed. And artists submitted burial concepts hoping to be selected by the company for a free grave site.
Joey Skaggs perpetuated the virtual burial business by setting up a bogus office with a telephone and an answering machine and responding to the barrage of requests for interviews. The fact that he played all the parts of the company's executives, i.e., Michael Varley, Managing Director; Stuart MacLelland, Marketing Director; and Paul Corey, Associate Marketing Director, during interviews, never crossed a single journalist's mind.
When he talked about the artist-designed adventure rides such as the "roller coaster of life and death," or the interactive playgrounds where children could frolic on artists' gravesites, or the shops that sold mausoleum replica key chains and coffee mugs, they all bought it.
Funeral directors who contacted the Final Curtain were all for it. They oozed delight that at last big investment money was helping to merge the death care industry into the entertainment world.
Skaggs always leaves clues in his performances. In this case, his own monument, mounted in the Monument Gallery, under the name of Joseph Sullivan, was a screen animation of Skaggs morphing from flesh to bone, with a worm crawling in one eye and out of his mouth.

it is re directing us to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_art

Performance art is art in which the actions of an individual or a group at a particular place and in a particular time constitute the work. It can happen anywhere, at any time, or for any length of time. Performance art can be any situation that involves four basic elements: time, space, the performer's body and a relationship between performer and audience. It is opposed to painting or sculpture, for example, where an object constitutes the work. Performance art traditionally involves the artist and other actors, but works like Survival Research Laboratories' pieces, utilizing robots and machines without people, also occur.
Although performance art could be said to include relatively mainstream activities such as theater, dance, music, and circus-related things like fire breathing, juggling, and gymnastics, these are normally instead known as the performing arts. Performance art is a term usually reserved to refer to a kind of usually avant-garde or conceptual art which grew out of the visual arts. Uniquely, Michel Lotito ("M. Mangetout") made performance out of eating unusual objects.
Oftentimes, there is exists a hierarchy between viewer and artist. With participation art, this wall is broken down and the work of art is now judged by the reaction of the viewer. In other words, the reaction is the deciding factor of the art.

Chris Burden during the performance of his 1974 piece Trans-fixed where he was nailed to the back of a Volkswagen

Performance art, as the term is commonly understood, began to be identified in the 1960s with the work of artists such as Yves Klein, Vito Acconci, Hermann Nitsch, Chris Burden, Carolee Schneemann, Yoko Ono, Joseph Beuys, Wolf Vostell and Allan Kaprow, who coined the term happenings. But performance art was certainly anticipated, if not explicitly formulated, by Japan's Gutai group of the 1950s, especially in such works as Atsuko Tanaka's "Electric Dress" (1956) [1]. In 1970 the British-based pair, Gilbert and George, created the first of their "living sculpture" performances when they painted themselves gold and sang "Underneath The Arches" for extended periods. Alongside pioneering work in video art by Jud Yalkut and others, some performance artists began combining video with other media to create experimental works like those of Chicago's Sandra Binion, who elevated mundane activities like ironing clothes, scrubbing steps, dining and doing laundry into living art. Binion has performed all over the world and is highly regarded as an artist in Europe.
Western cultural theorists often trace performance art activity back to the beginning of the 20th century. Dada for example, provided a significant progenitor with the unconventional performances of poetry, often at the Cabaret Voltaire, by the likes of Richard Huelsenbeck and Tristan Tzara. There were also Russian Futurism artists who could be identified as performance artists f.e. David Burliuk who painted the face for his actions (1910-20). However, there are accounts of Renaissance artists putting on public performances that could be said to be early ancestors to modern performance art. Some performance artists and theorists point to other traditions and histories, ranging from tribal, ritual to sporting and religious events. Performance art activity is not confined to European art traditions; many notable practitioners can be found in the United States, Asia, and Latin America.
[[url=http://mjdeathoax.forumotion.com//w/index.php?title=Performance_art&action=edit§ion=2]edit[/url]] Performance

Photograph of a performance by Yves Klein at Rue Gentil-Bernard, Fontenay-aux-Roses, October 1960, by Harry Shunk. Le Saut dans le Vide (Leap into the Void)

In performance art, usually one or more people perform in front of an audience. In contrast to the traditional performing arts, performance art is unconventional. Performance artists often challenge the audience to think in new and unconventional ways about theater and performing, break conventions of traditional performing arts, and break down conventional ideas about "what art is," similar to the postmodern art movement.[1] Thus, even though in most cases the performance is in front of an audience, in some cases, the audience becomes the performers. The performance may be scripted, unscripted, or improvisational. It may incorporate music, dance, song, or complete silence.
Roselee Goldberg stated in Performance Art: From Futurism to the Present:
<BLOCKQUOTE>
Performance has been a way of appealing directly to a large public, as well as shocking audiences into reassessing their own notions of art and its relation to culture. Conversely, public interest in the medium, especially in the 1980s, stems from an apparent desire of that public to gain access to the art world, to be a spectator of its ritual and its distinct community, and to be surprised by the unexpected, always unorthodox presentations that the artists devise. The work may be presented solo or with a group, with lighting, music or visuals made by the performance artist him or herself, or in collaboration, and performed in places ranging from an art gallery or museum to an “alternative space”, a theatre, café, bar or street corner. Unlike theatre, the performer is the artist, seldom a character like an actor, and the content rarely follows a traditional plot or narrative. The performance might be a series of intimate gestures or large-scale visual theatre, lasting from a few minutes to many hours; it might be performed only once or repeated several times, with or without a prepared script, spontaneously improvised, or rehearsed over many months.”[2]</BLOCKQUOTE>

[[url=http://mjdeathoax.forumotion.com//w/index.php?title=Performance_art&action=edit§ion=3]edit[/url]] Genres

Performance art genres include body art, fluxus, happening, action poetry, and intermedia. Some artists, e.g. the Viennese Actionists and neo-Dadaists, prefer to use the terms live art, "action art", intervention or "manoeuvre" to describe their activities. These activities are also sometimes referred to simply as "actions".

The final curtain
This is very interesting.
[from ]http://www.scribd.com/doc/19814719/Michael-Jackson-Biography]
In his 1988 autobiography "Moonwalk", Michael mentions that the Victory Tour was originally to be called "The FinalCurtain", to highlight the fact that himself and his brothers would be touring for the final time. However, the name was changed as they did not want to emphasize this point.
(Would he be back in July with the Jackson5?)

Looking at www.finalcurtain.com:
What are they about?
[
Historically, artists have always been on the vanguard of new ways of
thinking and behaving. Because The Final Curtain represents such a
fundamentally new way of thinking about the death-care market, we believe
that limiting our customer base to artists, at least in the initial
roll-out stages, will result in a higher quality product that will set new
standards for the death care industry.

Who better to establish this breakthrough approach to death-care than the
creative community itself? In association with The Final Curtain, artists,
writers and designers will have the opportunity to design truly innovative,
creative and thought provoking monuments to themselves and others, and know
that their work will be available to the public at large in perpetuity.
]

Did you see the media coverage site for this unconventional conventionalists' funeral service?

There was a thread on MJHD about this in September that I could find in cache - credits go to S.T.U.D.Y. at MJHD - for those who did not see it:

"This Is It … The Final Curtain Call"
The "final curtain
call" is a very interesting phrase, which was used during the London
press conference for the O2 "This Is It" performances (note: even if it
was a double, MJ himself was still the author of the message given).

Here is a transcript of the key statement (at 4 min, 35 sec): "This is it, I mean this is really it; this is the final — this is the final curtain call." {
click here}. Let’s look at two aspects of that phrase: the "final curtain", and then the "curtain call".

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The "Final Curtain"
"Final Curtain" is the name of a hoax about death that was started in September of 1998! It was designed by Joey Skaggs, and you can read about it on the Museum of Hoaxes website {
click here}; on the Final Curtain website {click here}; and on Skaggs’ own website {click here; also click here}. I have selected a few very interesting statements from these websites, as well as from a few other sources.

"In 1998, Skaggs put together an international team of volunteer writers, artists, and designers to create The Final Curtain … It was immediately accepted by the public as a reality without question. … Skaggs always leaves clues in his [hoax] performances." {click here}

"… the Final Curtain hoax was two years in the making, and involved dozens of co-conspirators. … Numerous talented writers and artists, some of whom prefer to remain anonymous for professional reasons, created an elaborate and convincing nonexistent virtual business under Skaggs’ creative direction." {click here}

"JOEY SKAGGS has been staging hoaxes—to lampoon the media, to lampoon the culture, but never to make money—for 34 years. Some hoaxes are huge and take place over the course of yearsTHE SIGNS WERE THERE for journalists who doubted Final Curtain. But they didn't. … Part of participating in Final Curtain was agreeing to keep my mouth shut until it was time to reveal the hoax. … Final Curtain wasn't intended to make money; it was intended to draw attention to two issues—the media's wicked ways, as we've seen, and the death industry." {
click here}

Wikipedia on Joey Skaggs: "The Final Curtain … It was meant to satirize showmanship in places likeForest Lawn cemeteries." {
click here}

Although a different MJ, notice the name of a person who reported about the Final Curtain: "KRLA, CBS, Los Angeles, Michael Jackson, 10-25-1999" {
click here; also click here}

"This [Final Curtain] was a really sophisticated prank with a lot of people involved. … Media hoaxing has a bright, promising future [after the year 2,000!?!]. All we can hope is that the hoaxers are smarter than the media." {
click here}

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Final Curtain Hoax and MJ Hoax Parallels

#1 The hoaxes were directly related to "1998".
#2 The hoaxes were all about "death".
#3 The hoaxes had a large "team" involving "numerous talented co-conspirators" (all agreeing to secrecy until the time to remove the "curtain").
#4 The hoaxes were "huge", "elaborate", "sophisticated", and "convincing".
#5 Yet the hoax directors "always left clues" and "THE SIGNS WERE THERE" for the few who really wanted to know the truth.
#6 In spite of the clues, the hoaxes were "immediately accepted by the public as a reality without question".
#7 Both hoaxes had a person involved named "MICHAEL JACKSON"!
#8 Both hoaxes refer specifically to "Forest Lawn cemeteries".
#9 The purpose of these hoaxes is to draw public attention to the "media’s
wicked ways" (reporting as truth that which they have not carefully
investigated, etc).
[...]
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The "Curtain Call"
Notice the meaning of "curtain call" on Wikipedia (the word [hoax] is added): "A curtain call (walkdown, bow) occurs at the end of a [hoax] performance when individuals return to the stage to be recognized by the audience for their [hoax] performance." {
click here}

Soon and very soon, we are going to see the man behind the (final) curtain (call); the King of Hoax! So can we expect the MJ "resurrection" today—the big "This Is It", "Final Curtain", 9-9-09 day??? Probably not before: "Darkness falls across the land, and the midnight hour is close at hand …" (Thriller).

Last but not least: This Is It—this is my final post (post # ?). You can believe it, or leave it; but either way: as the Final Curtain Call is being revealed, you will see what was there behind the curtain all along.

Some background on the other Michael Jackson from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Jackson_%28radio_commentator%29:
[Michael Jackson is an English-born talk-show host based in the Los Angeles, California area. Jackson is best known for his radio show which covered the arts, politics
and human interest subjects, particularly in the Los Angeles and
greater Southern California area. The show originally aired on L.A.
radio station KABC and briefly aired on KGIL.]

My Interpretation:

Bits & Pieces - the parts that make up everything the clues etc
these pieces at first seem to present us with the whole picture
BUT the word semblance is important...
Semblance

  • an outward or token appearance or form that is deliberately
    misleading; "he hoped his claims would have a semblance of
    authenticity"
  • illusion: an erroneous mental representation
  • likeness: picture consisting of a graphic image of a person or thing

Things may not be as we first assumed

Interesting..
But considering that's a tarantula, and this is a black widow, I don't think it has anything to do with James Bond. Sorry.

I'm still going to stick with my original interpretation, which I'll explain here.

Michael Jackson > Black Widow > Thriller > Vincent Price narration
Alice Cooper > Devil's Food > Black Widow > Vincent Price narration

Vincent Price & Alice Cooper performing The Black Widow

Vincent Price & Michael Jackson in the studio recording Thriller.

Alice Cooper performance: Basically, on stage there would be dancers in Black Widow spider costume... because a mechanical version was probably too difficult in the 70's and not theatrical enough The choreographed struggle was an important aspect.. I think MJ & KO using a Black Widow spider, (hardly coincidental imo) in a song that Vincent Price narrated on is, on the surface, self-explanatory. It was a tribute to Vincent Price, horror movies, and, of course, looks awesome. It's just so obvious if people would take a moment to actually connect those dots.

But underneath the surface is the interesting part.. And, this quote really sums it up.

Black widows represent death. When the spider comes on stage during the movie Michael comes out of the spider. He escaped death.

So, based on what I wrote above, I'd agree with that. The song 'Black Widow' is about being enslaved, controlled, and mindless conformation. In the live performances, Alice is attacked by dancers in Black Widow costume, and depending on the version of it, either dies or escapes.. In TII Thriller Michael has been trapped/swallowed/eaten by the Black Widow Spider machine.
VP: "In fact, immediately after the consummation of her marriage to the smaller and weaker male of the specie, she kills and eats him."
More accurately, a black widow would trap, kill and then eat the male. But in TII, MJ emerges from this unscathed.

Including the extra lyrics only convinced me more so of this, and for those who didn't know, they are available to be heard on Youtube.
They were recorded with the original, but to my knowledge, hadn't been used until now.

Welcome to the official DVD Easter Eggs FAQ! I took some time to write this so that you wont need to ask too many questions about the site, things you read, etc. So, here goes. If you have a question that you think other people might want to know the answer to, please email it to us through the contact form.

What is a DVD Easter Egg?

This is probably the most obvious, and most frequently asked question. Of course the chances are that if you found this site, you may already know, but if not, here goes. As most will know, during the Easter holiday, people will paint eggs, then hide them for their children to find. This is the traditional idea behind the "Easter Egg". Extend that idea into the digital world, and an Easter Egg is something that is hidden, in some form of media. Way back when Microsoft released Excel (as an example) there was an easter egg in the software. The developers hid a game in the program. You had to fill certain fields of the spreadsheet with a specific value, etc. and you were able to unlock this 'Doom-like' game. Well much the same concept goes for easter eggs on DVD's. The developers who make the DVD's, their menu systems, etc. tend to hide special features on the disc.

What does the R1, R2, R3, etc. mean next to a DVD Title?

This is the second most frequently asked question. The R# is the Region of the DVD. There are (in theory) a total of 9 or 10 Region codes for DVD's. DVD players are designed to be sold in, and play (be default) the Region code of the DVD, for the region it's sold in. On almost every DVD case, you will see a globe with a number super-imposed on it. This is the Region Code for that DVD. Here is the listing of codes (thanks to about.com for the quick list):

REGION 1 -- USA, Canada
REGION 2 -- Japan, Europe, South Africa, Middle East, Greenland
REGION 3 -- S.Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Parts of South East Asia
REGION 4 -- Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (including Mexico)
REGION 5 -- Eastern Europe, Russia, India, Africa
REGION 6 -- China
REGION 7 -- Reserved for Unspecified Special Use
REGION 8 -- Resevered for Cruise Ships, Airlines, etc...
REGION 0 or REGION ALL -- Discs are uncoded and can be played Worldwide, however, PAL discs must be played in a PAL-compatible unit and NTSC discs must be played in an NTSC-compatible unit.

So when you are looking for Eggs, make sure to find the DVD Title with the Region code for your DVD next to it. One thing to note, this site (and DVD's in general it seems) tend to be for Region 1 Discs. This is not to say that other regions don't have eggs, they just don't seem to be as common, or they aren't reported to us as much.

How do I find these Eggs?

This is a tough one, as there is no specific answer. The best bet would be to read the descirptions on some of the Eggs already on the site, see how they can be found and they utilize those techniques on the DVD's you're searching.

Ok, I found an egg! Where do I send it?

That's great, good work! To submit an egg to us right now, we have a form Click Here This will let you submit any eggs you have found!

Symbolism

According to R. Allendy, this number joins the part of evolution to the whole evolution - report of the cosmic evolution and the individual evolution.

Symbol of sinners who lived before the arrival of the Christ according to Fathers' of the Church, because this number is the product of 7, the creature evolving, by 11, the transgression.

For Saint Augustin, it is the last limit of the sin since this number is the product of 11, number of the sin, by 7, number of the perfection.

According to Jacob Boehme, 77 is the total number of the divine revelation thanks to the Word formed. Because starting from only one Verb speaking and a unique vital spirit, it exit 77 languages of which "five belong to the Spirit of God who speaks by his children when and as He wants; but the sixty-twelve others belong to the persons and to the human particularities by which speaking the own intelligence of the man, telling at the same time lies and truths. Also the sixty-twelve languages, that is to say Babel, must pass by the court of God and the pure has to be separated from the impure and to undergo the test of the fire".

Bible

Number of times is necessary to forgive offenses (Mt 18,22). However, according to other references, such as NRSV Bible, some Protestant editions, or in the visions of Maria Valtorta, Jesus asks to forgive 70 times 7 times.

The 77 generations of Adam to the Christ according to the evangelist of Luke. (Lk 3,23-38)

Cain is avenged 7 times but Lamek, 77 times. (Gn 4,24)

General

In the mystical Jew, according to a fragment originated from the Merkaba shelema, Jerusalem 1922 (one of the two most important texts of Shi'ur Qoma) it concerns the "greatness" of our Lord: "Rabbi Ismael says: Metatron, the great Prince of the testimony told me: About YHWH, the God of Israel, the living and constant God, our Lord and master, I certify what follows: From the residence of his glory (that is to say from the throne) further down there are 118 myriads. Its height is 236 myriads and thousand miles. From his right arm to his left arm there are 77 myriads. From his right pupil to his left pupil there are 30 myriades. His brainpan is 3 myriads and a third. The crowns on his head are 60 myriads which corresponds to the 60 myriads of heads in Israel." (folio 34a-b)

The iridium, Ir, atomic number 77, is a white metal which the name is a derivative of the Greek word "iris" meaning" rainbow". It is under the sign of the rainbow that God concludes his Alliance between him and the humanity, and the Christian remains in this Alliance if he forgives 77 times the faults of his brothers (Mt 18,22).

Zarathustra died at the age of 77 years.

The twelfth perfect number, number of which the sum of its dividers gives the same number, contains 77 numbers. Let us mention that the first five perfect numbers are 6, 28, 496, 8128 and 33550336. At the present time we know 24 perfect numbers, the last one being 2^19936 x (2^19937-1). That last number has 12003 numbers. All the known perfect numbers are even and we don't know if there is an odd perfect number. But the mathematician Bryant Tuckerman has demonstrated that, if a such number existed, it would be higher than 1036.

Halley's comet, turning around the sun, reappears approximately every 77 years.

Birthday of a person in Japan: happy long life - kiju.

Gematria

In the discussions of Vassula with Jesus, This one often asks her to end the dictation of her letters by the mark of his name, that is to say "fish" written in Greek, icqus. By using the gematria in "n", that gives 77 = 9+22+8+20+18.

With the gematria in "n", 77 is the sum of two numbers in facing: 34 value of the Hebrew word spirit, 20+6+8=34; and 43, number of the Hebrew word flesh, 2+21+20=43. That reminds us that the Son of God become man (flesh) in order that the man rises up towards God (spirit). The flesh and the spirit are then complementary: the flesh bearing the spirit and the fruit of the work of the Spirit will be the salvation of the flesh which will receive the incorruptibility.

According to the revelations of Our Lord to J.N.S.R. (just as with other mystics), France is great to the eyes of God because it has and will have a great role to fulfil in the propagation of the Faith. In Hebrew, the word "France" gives 77 = 18+20+17+22 by using the gematria in "n".

The numerical value of the Hebrew word BGhE, meaning to pray, gives 77.

By using as correspondence table A=1, B=2, ..., Z=26, we find that the French word "BIBLIQUE" (biblical) = 77.

"A decision (on whether to prosecute) will be made in 2010. It is not going to be made this year," LAPD Commander Patrick Gannon tells PEOPLE. Although Jackson's June 25 "death" was ruled a homicide by the county coroner, which found lethal levels of the toxic anesthetic propofol in his body, and Murray admitted to administering propofol at Jackson's bedside to help him sleep, authorities have to determine whether Murray was solely responsible, and to what extent any negligence can be considered criminal. According to a search warrant unsealed Friday, Murray "said he was not the first doctor to introduce Jackson to propofol. ... Jackson referred to it as his 'milk,'" and Jackson had several doctors locally and abroad who gave him propofol. Police are being careful, and consulting with other agencies including the state medical board and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office, which will ultimately decide what charges to file, if any, Gannon says. "We have taken our time with this to make sure it's done correctly," Gannon says. Michael's sister, Janet Jackson, and other family members say they blame Murray for Jackson's death, but the doctor has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

while thinking about TII 'Thriller' with ukrainian subtitles, don't forget about "Christmas Eve" by Gogol Wink about 3 hours ago from web

Christmas Eve (Gogol)
From Wikipedia
Christmas Eve , literally translated The Night Before Christmas, is the first story in the second volume of the collection Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka by Nikolai Gogol.
Plot
The story opens with a description of the winter scenery of Dikanka, Ukraine, a witch flying across the night sky and the devil stealing the moon and hiding it in his pocket, first playing with it in the sky, which no one in the village notices. Since it is the night before Christmas, the devil is free to roam around and torment people as he pleases, so he decides to find a way to get back at the village blacksmith, Vakula, because he paints hideous portraits of him in the church.
In the village lives a Cossack named Choub, whose daughter Oksana, an exceptionally beautiful village girl loved by all the young boys, is the object of the blacksmith Vakula’s affection. Choub goes out in the night with his friend Panas to the sexton’s home gathering, suddenly noticing that the moon is not in the sky. Meanwhile, Vakula is trying to win over Oksana, who mentions that his mother, Solokha, is a witch. Choub and his friend are suddenly engulfed in a snowstorm started by the devil and lose each other. While his friend finds his way to the tavern, Choub comes upon his home, but the blacksmith, who is visiting Oksana, answers him. Choub is confused about why the blacksmith would be in his own house, and concludes its not his house. The blacksmith then sends him away.
When Vakula goes back to Oksana, she tells him she won’t marry him unless he can get for her the slippers off the Tsaritsa’s feet. While their discussion is happening, Solokha is with the devil in her home, when someone knocks at the door. To hide the truth, she puts the devil in a coal sack, emptying out the contents. The mayor walks in and begins to speak with her but no sooner than he does there is another knock at the door. The mayor hides in another bag and the sexton comes into the home. While he is trying to play around with Solokha, there is another knock at the door and she hides him in another sack while Choub comes into the house. Another knock comes at the door and this time it is Vakula, and Choub goes into the sack that the sexton is already in, not knowing he is there, thinking it is something else. After his mother goes outside to speak with another visitor, the blacksmith takes the heavy bags to get them to the forge, wondering why he seems to have lost his strength temporarily, and concluding it had to do with Oksana not loving him. He comes upon Oksana, who again belittles him, and runs off saying goodbye to her, threatening to kill himself.
He decides the only way to win her is to indeed capture the slippers, so he goes to Puzaty Patsyuk, a local Zaporozhian Cossack who was believed to be in league with the devil. He goes to him and asks him to tell him the way to find the devil while Patsyuk eats magical varenyky that fly down into a basin of cream and then into his mouth, Vakula brushes one aside as it rubs cream on his closed lips. After asking Patsyuk about the devil, he remarks that he cannot give directions to the blacksmith to what is already on his back. Vakula doesn’t understand until he puts down the sacks and the devil hops onto his back. Vakula tricks the devil into thinking he will do as the devil asks, then grabs him by the tail and threatens to put the sign of the cross on him until it agrees to help him.
Fearing the cross, the devil takes him into the sky en route to St. Petersburg, leaving the sacks behind. A group of locals begin to take the bags and discover the men inside, while Vakula goes to find the Tsaritsa. He is amazed by the sites of the city, and has the devil (who shrinks into his pocket) transport him into the palace, where he meets up with a few Zaporozhian Cossacks who are meeting her (i.e., Catherine the Great). When she comes to greet them, the blacksmith appeals to her and glorifies her slippers, which she finds amusing and agrees to give to him.
In the meantime Oksana gets upset because the villagers have been passing around the rumor that Vakula has killed himself. She knows that Vakula, a good Christian, would not do this, and that night she falls deeply in love with him. She is delighted to see him return and agrees to marry him even before he shows her the slippers. They get married and the story ends with a bishop passing by their beautifully painted house. In the church the blacksmith has made another painting, showing the devil in hell, which villagers spit on and the women bring their frightened children up to say “Look what a kaka (poophead)” (transliterated as: Yaka kaka!)!
